Featured Project – Fleming Steel Erectors Addresses Supply Chain Issues and Completes Transportation Terminals for R+L Carriers on Time, with No Injuries

As supply chain logjams roiled the U.S. economy throughout 2022, Fleming Steel Erectors (FSE) confronted the problem head-on by serving as the steel erection partner for a transportation terminal project in Matteson, Illinois. The project, built in partnership with Coast Construction for transportation and logistics company, R+L Carriers, is strategically located to help boost supply-chain resiliency and improve the flow of goods and commerce throughout the US. 

Ironically, the project had to contend with the same supply chain pressures that it was being built to alleviate, but the FSE team successfully navigated the challenges and completed the steel erection on time and within budget. FSE also extended its remarkable safety record, navigating the entire process with no injuries, despite the formidable challenges associated with working through a winter on the Midwestern plains. 

The 248,000 square-foot installation features more than 2,212 feet of building length and utilized 1,410,795 pounds of steel. It incorporated the Bayliner insulation system and the Butlerib II wall system. The structure includes perimeter overhangs and soffits, with 316 overhead door openings.

This large-scale project illustrates FSE’s commitment to building America’s supply chain infrastructure—in this case, with transportation terminals for over-the-road trucking.
