Commercial Metals Company (CMC) is a Fortune 500® steel recycling and scrap metal processing operation with mills operating worldwide. The AZ2 facility in Mesa, AZ, is the company’s third micro-mill and the first in the world to produce rebar and merchant bar quality (MBQ) products utilizing continuous casting technologies. CMC’s AZ2 is recognized as the most sustainable mini-mill in the world. By connecting its arc furnaces directly to renewable energy sources, the plant achieves a 60% reduction in emissions and operates with 80% greater energy efficiency than conventional steel mills.
Fleming Steel Erectors delivered the furnish and erect package on this project, leading a highly coordinated effort that brought together design, engineering, field operations, fabrication, logistics, and safety. The scope required precise integration between multiple stakeholders, including CMC plant operations, to ensure the new facility would meet demanding performance needs.
Despite supply chain and labor challenges, Fleming maintained an aggressive schedule, safely erecting massive hybrid steel structures over pits, trenches, and heavy foundations designed to support 150-ton cranes with 75-foot hook heights. The team employed innovative erection strategies, including lifting pre-assembled “pods” into place, ensuring quality, precision, and safety over more than 100,000 manhours—all completed with zero recordable injuries.
